PERIODONTAL
DISEASE IS USUALLY A PAINLESS PROGRESSIVE, INFECTIOUS DISEASE
Untreated
periodontal disease in effect "seeds" the bloodstream with
disease-causing bacteria.
If you notice any of the following signs of gum disease, see
your dentist immediately:
 | gums that bleed when you brush or floss
|
 | red, swollen or tender gums
|
 | teeth that are oversensitive to hot and cold
|
 | gums that have pulled away from the teeth
|
 | bad breath that doesn't go away
|
 | pain when chewing
|
 | calculus or tartar buildup
|
 | pus between your teeth and gums
|
 | loose teeth
|
 | a change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
|
 | a change in the fit of partial dentures or
dentures.

Gum disease is PROGRESSIVE-left
untreated, the condition will worsen and may lead to permanent
irreversible damage to your gums tissue and the bone
supporting your teeth.
Studies show a
two fold increase
in risk for coronary heart
disease and stroke in individuals with periodontitis.
Gram-negative bacteria and proinflammatory cytokines are know to
enter the blood stream from inlayed periodontal tissues.
Smoking, diet, and genetic and environmental factors are also
major contributors. If you smoke and/or have a
personal or family history of coronary heart disease you may
need special dental attention.~
It is important to have two regular exams a year
because the early stages of periodontal disease are easier and
less costly to treat.
Beyond
the Mouth:
The
mouth is a good barometer of
overall health. Inflammation
of gum tissue can be an indicator
of more serious inflammation in
the arterial walls.
