Parital Denture

A partial denture is a device for replacing missing natural teeth that can be permanent or removable.

A partial denture will:

	Replace missing teeth to restore your attractive smile
	Prevent drifting of teeth
	Improve your bite and speech
	Make chewing easier and more comfortable.

A partial denture can be made when one or more of your natural teeth remain in your upper or lower jaw to anchor the partial to. This removable partial usually consist of replacement teeth attached to pink or gum-colored plastic bases, which are connected by a metal framework.

Your missing teeth are replaced by the teeth on the partial denture. The partial denture than attaches to your natural teeth with metal clasps. These metal clasps are hook-like structures that help hold it in place.

This process can take between three to four appointments.

	One of your appointments will be taking impressions of your jaw, bite relationship and color shade of your teeth. This information is sent to our dental lab where these measurements are used to make a partial denture made to fit only you.
	Next a "wax try-in" will be done. If your partial is made of metal and acrylic a wax model is made in the exact shape and position that the metal is to be in . The "lost wax" technique is used to replace the wax pattern with metal. The metal framework is cast, polished and the acrylic or plastic is placed around the frame. The replacement teeth are then molded from materials that resemble the texture, shape and color of the missing tooth/teeth. These replacement teeth are cemented to the gum colored plastic bases which are connected by a rust proof metal framework. This framework is than anchored to the adjacent natural teeth to hold the denture firmly in place.
	At the third appointment you will receive your completed partial denture.
	Other appointments may be needed for adjustments.

Disadvantage:

Recent studies have shown that the supporting teeth of a partial denture are at a substantially greater risk of being lost than if the patient had an permanent bridge. 92% of the adjacent teeth restored with a permanent bridge were intact and only 56% of adjacent teeth with a removable partial denture were intact. This could be because metal clasps tend to trap food, plaque and debris that could lead to damage and loss. This is a good reason to keep your regular recare exam visits so we can work together to help you keep these supporting teeth.

Permanent bridge or implants can replace missing teeth, but this is not always possible. Weakness or lack of teeth, inadequate bone support and economic considerations are all reasons that may affect your choices.

How do you wear a removable partial denture?
Removable partial dentures are attached to your natural teeth with metal clasps or devices called precision attachments.

How long will it take to get used to wearing a partial denture?
Your partial denture may feel awkward or bulky for the first few weeks, but your mouth will eventually get used to it.

How long should you wear a partial denture?
Initially, you may want to wear your partial denture all the time. Your dentist will give you specific instructions on how long it should be worn and when it should be removed. Generally, your mouth tissues need to rest so it is advisable that you take out your partial denture at least 15 minutes per day.

Will the partial denture change the way you speak?
Your partial denture may help your speech. It can be difficult to speak clearly when you are missing teeth.
