Each diabetic patient warrants special attention!

Level of care for individuals with diabetes

1.  Update medical and dental history at each visit. and when the medications are taken.

2.  Patients with poorly controlled diabetes are at higher risk for developing oral complications especially infection, so patients with uncontrolled diabetes often require supplemental antibiotic therapy.

3.  Most types of dental treatments should not interfere with the medical control of diabetes.  Orofacial infections and dentoalveolar surgery can increase blood glucose levels and insulin requirements.  Need to consult with patient's doctor to discuss potential modifications to patients medical therapy.

4.  Mediations used by dentist may require adjustments in medical therapies.  Large amounts of epinephrine or low doses of systemic corticosteroids can alter blood glucose levels.

5. Use a glucose monitoring device that can give blood glucose reading in less than 30 seconds to determine the level of diabetic control and record blood glucose levels at each visit
